How to Tie a Taekwondo Belt

Tying your belt correctly is one of the first things you learn in Taekwondo — and one of the first things kids forget. A neat, properly-tied belt isn't just for looks: it's a sign of respect for the art, the instructor, and yourself. Here's how to do it right.

Step-by-step: tying a Taekwondo belt

  1. Find the center. Hold the belt out and find the middle. Place the center against your stomach, just below your belly button.
  2. Wrap both ends around your back. Bring each end behind you and cross them in the back.
  3. Bring both ends to the front. Pull both ends back to the front of your body. You should now have two layers of belt around your waist and two equal-length ends in front.
  4. Cross right over left. Take the right end and lay it over the left end at the center.
  5. Tuck up and through. Take the end that's now on top and tuck it under both layers of the belt around your waist, pulling it up and out the top.
  6. Form the knot. You'll now have two ends pointing in opposite directions. Take the top end, fold it down over the bottom end, and pull it through the loop you've created — like tying a simple square knot.
  7. Pull tight. Pull both ends firmly so the knot is snug and flat. The two ends should hang at equal length.

Common mistakes

Why the knot matters in martial arts

In traditional Taekwondo, the belt represents your rank and your journey. Tying it carelessly signals you don't take the training seriously. Tying it well — every single time — is one of the smallest habits that separates a serious student from a casual one. We teach our beginners to retie their belt as soon as it comes loose during class, not after.

Does the same method work for a karate belt?

Yes — the basic square-knot method above works for karate (Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, etc.), Judo, and BJJ belts. Some BJJ schools use a slightly different "Hollywood knot" with extra tucks, but the traditional method described above is universally accepted.
