How to Choose a Martial Arts School
If you're searching "martial arts classes near me" or "karate for kids near me," you'll probably find five to ten schools within a 15-minute drive. They all look great on Google. So how do you actually pick one?
After 20+ years training families in Marlboro, NJ, here's the honest checklist we'd hand a friend.
1. Start with the instructor, not the style
Karate, Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu — at the kids' and beginner-adult level, the instructor matters far more than the style on the door. Look for:
- Verifiable rank and lineage — Kukkiwon certification for Taekwondo, recognized federation rank for karate or BJJ.
- Years actively teaching, not just years training.
- How they talk to kids on the mat. Sit through a class before you sign anything.
2. Watch a real class — not just the intro
An intro class is a sales tool; a regular group class is the actual product. Ask to observe a normal weekday class for your child's age group. Watch for:
- Are kids grouped by age and rank, or all mixed together?
- Does every student get personal correction, or are the back rows ignored?
- Is the room clean, matted, and well-ventilated?
- Are parents welcome to watch, or hidden behind a frosted window?
3. Get the pricing in writing — before the tour ends
This is where most parents get burned. Ask up front:
- Monthly tuition for 2, 3, and unlimited classes/week.
- Contract length and the cancellation policy.
- Cost of uniforms, belt tests, sparring gear, and tournaments.
- Whether siblings or families get a discount.
A trustworthy school will hand you a printed price sheet without flinching. If pricing is "let's talk about that after class," that's a red flag.
4. Ask about the path to black belt
Not because your 6-year-old will get one tomorrow — but because the answer tells you a lot. A good school can explain:
- How many belts there are and roughly how long each takes.
- What's required to test (skills, attendance, character).
- How many active black belts the school has produced.
If "everyone gets a black belt in 18 months," walk away. Real progress takes years.
5. Use the free intro class — and trust your kid
Almost every reputable martial arts school offers a free 1-on-1 introductory class. Use it. Then ask your child two questions afterward: Did you have fun? and Do you want to go back? Their answer is the most important data point you'll get.
Red flags to walk away from
- Long-term contracts with steep cancellation penalties.
- Pressure to sign on the same day as the tour.
- All ages and ranks training together in one big class.
- Instructor can't or won't share their rank certification.
- "Guaranteed black belt" pitches.
